When Audi released its updated A6, we all knew what would come next: an avant version with all the updated bits. And here it is – the new 2012 Audi A6 Avant.Like its sedan sibling, the new Audi A6 Avant presents the brand’s full array of progressive technological expertise. Its lightweight body, large portions of which–20 percent in fact–are made of aluminum, sets new standards, as does the wide selection of assistance and multimedia systems.

The Avant is 4.93m long, 1.87m wide and 1.46m tall. Its wheelbase grows to 2.91m (an increase of around 7cm) in a move designed to free up cabin and luggage space. 565 litres of carrying capacity. Alas that’s exactly the same capacity as the existing A6 Avant, and with the seats folded down the 1680 litres on offer is only 20 more than the current car.

Inside, the estate model features the same materials and dashboard layout as the four-door version adding some bespoke options such as a load-through hatch, a fixing set and a power rear hatch. Furthermore, a range of diesel units will be available for the Avant range including the 2.0 liter TDI that is capable of producing 130 kW and 380 Nm as well as a 3.0 liter TDI V6 that will churn out 180 kW and 500 Nm of torque. Besides the aforementioned six-speed manual, the A6 Avant can be fitted with a CVT or the seven-speed S-Tronic gearbox. However, the 3.0 TDI is equipped with an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission.

Audi’s new A6 Avant estate will go on sale by the end of June and cost from around £31,700.

The upmarket estate is almost identical in size to its predecessor, but extensive use of aluminium in the body panels means it’s up to 70kg lighter than before.
